• In this week’s selection of free Criterion films on Hulu, we’re paying tribute to four of our favorite stars with Iconic French Actresses. Watch the exquisite Catherine Deneuve in Luis Buñuel’s sexy and surreal Belle de jour and François Truffaut’s gripping The Last Metro; the formidable Jeanne Moreau in Louis Malle’s once-scandalous The Lovers and Truffaut’s art-house evergreen Jules and Jim; and the versatile Delphine Seyrig, as a wild comic-book sidekick in William Klein’s Mr. Freedom and the routine-bound title character in Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles.

And for our fourth phenomenal performer, Isabelle Huppert, we present two powerful films by Claude Chabrol not currently available on DVD or Blu-ray: the tragic historical drama Story of Women and the intense psychological thriller La cérémonie, in which Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire (another amazing actor) costar as maids resentful of the bourgeois family they work for. You can watch La cérémonie for free in its entirety, below or at Hulu. And remember, if you sign up for Hulu Plus for just $7.99 a month, you can see these and the hundreds of other Criterion films streaming there any time.

Unrelated to the fine films mentioned above, criterion has added 9 films directed by the great Rainer Werner Fassbinder. 9 films including the 4 that were already on hulu, including "World on a Wire." I strongly recommend that anyone who isnt familar with his work take full advantage of this oppurtunity. He was an extremely gifted and prolific filmmaker. There has not been anyone like him since. I beg all of you, my fellow cinephiles, take this plunge. You will never be the same.

Belle De Jour is certainly unique, but I didn't gain anything from it. Got thirty minutes Into Jeanne Dielman, but like other Akerman films, couldn't stand it.

I have noticed many films have been added to Hulu in the last month or so (didn't catch when), both films featured in the online catalogue here (like Gray's Anatomy, which I very much look forward to) and also many more that aren't (including a few Satyajit Ray films, it appears. Excellent!) I wonder if it would be possible to create a simple landing page here for films on Hulu Plus that aren't listed on this site otherwise (as there appear to be many, but it is hard to compare the two catalogues) or at least update the pages of the films already included here (such as Gray's or the other Soderbergh film recently added, Schizopolis) to reflect their newly-uploaded status as playing on Hulu now.

La Cérémonie absolutely needs a Blu-ray release!!! Hopefully it has an upcoming release on Blu-ray/DVD later in the year. The same for The Life Aquatic and Deprisa, Deprisa!
