Keisuke Kinoshita’s visually remarkable The Ballad of Narayama was filmed almost entirely on studio sets. Inspired by kabuki theater, the director intentionally created an air of stagelike artifice. Check out some gorgeous images of the sensational and expressive scenery, designed by Kisaku Ito and Chiyoo Umeda.
