In his liner notes for the new Eclipse set Maidstone and Other Films by Norman Mailer, critic Michael Chaiken writes that, in Mailer’s films, “‘plot’ is a device by which nominal actors externalize psychic processes and conditions.” And the mostly improvising performers in Mailer’s 1968–70 trio of experimental films certainly externalize their feelings. Here are a few shots of Mailer’s actors (including the director himself, who stars in all three movies) up close and personal—some caught in extremis, others exhibiting cool, all compelling testaments to Mailer’s fascination with the human face.
