I love Sam Fuller but White Dog is not his best film. It's got some very serious problems with acting and at times the direction feels lazy. I do understand why it made it's way to Criterion because of the subjet matter but it's certainly not an example of cinematic excellence.
I couldn't disagree more, Flowers. 'White Dog' is one of Fuller's most provocative films, not to mention one of the best movies dealing with racism in America. If racism can be taught can it be untaught? Very fascinating stuff. And through the perspective of an animal no less. Look, I love 'The Naked Kiss' and 'Shock Corridor' just as much as the next cinefile, but for me, personally, 'White Dog' is in my top 3 films concerning racism. Give it another chance. It's worth a second viewing.
“Mr. Cowie I'm looking forward to hearing your stories of Ingmar Bergman; that man was so candid on camera I can only imagine what he reveals about himself amongst friends with a glass or two of wine . . .”
