• The characters in this week’s festival of free movies on Hulu Plus all have an appetite for self-destruction. These are men and women at the end of their tether, grasping for a final, desperate thrill. Two social outcasts meet up with a group of dangerous anarchists in Nagisa Oshima’s fragmented Japanese Summer: Double Suicide. Louis Malle’s devastating The Fire Within follows the final day of a suicidal man, played by Purple Noon’s Maurice Ronet. Albert Finney received an Oscar nomination for his powerhouse work as an alcoholic British consul living in Mexico in John Huston’s Under the Volcano. Masahiro Shinoda’s luxuriously stylish Japanese New Wave noir Pale Flower concerns a gangster and a beautiful gambling addict caught in an obsessive downward spiral. And Deprisa, Deprisa is Carlos Saura’s tale of rootless, law-breaking juvenile delinquents in Madrid. This rarely screened film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and it’s not available on DVD or Blu-ray in the U.S. But this week you can watch it below, or at Hulu, for free. And don’t forget: if you sign up for Hulu Plus for a monthly fee of just $7.99, you can see the hundreds of other Criterion films now streaming
