• Expect some of the laughs to stick in your throat a bit when you watch the films in Comedies That Bite, this week’s festival of free Criterion movies on Hulu Plus. All of them are satires by visionary directors from around the world. With The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin shocked the world by making a comedy about Hitler; in the uproarious Mr. Freedom, William Klein made a star-spangled mockery of American jingoism; Pietro Germi skewers Sicilian family traditions in Seduced and Abandoned; Luis Buñuel’s Simon of the Desert is a brilliantly blasphemous portrait of the life of Saint Simeon Stylites; and Nagisa Oshima went slapstick with the inventive and dangerously comic Three Resurrected Drunkards, about three bumbling young Japanese men mistaken for Korean immigrants and pursued by the authorities. Watch the film in its entirety below or over at Hulu. And if you sign up for Hulu Plus for a monthly fee of just $7.99, you can stream hundreds more Criterion titles.
