’Tis the season for DVD gift guides, and critic John Powers is quick out of the gate with a lineup of movie recommendations for NPR’s Fresh Air. Among his top choices are works by two great Charleses: Chaplin’s Modern Times (“Contains some of the great iconic sequences in film history”) and Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter (“A masterpiece . . . which in Criterion’s new edition looks better than I’ve ever seen it”). Plus, Powers gives a shout-out to the “gripping melodrama” Black Narcissus, which, like Modern Times and The Night of the Hunter, is available on Criterion Blu-ray and DVD. It’s worth a listen—or a look: you can play the audio or read the transcript.
