Great list. It's interesting to see the Academy's rising bias towards lighter material in the contemporary era. How many of these films would still be nominated today? Not many, I'm afraid.

I would argue that Best Foreign Language Film nominees are still pretty great. I was surprised when Amour was nominated for Best Picture last year, because it had no chance of winning that award unfortunately.

I love this list! I like that some of these films were nominated for Oscars for other than best foreign language. Unfortunately, it's still pretty rare that most would be nominated for best picture.

Great list! I think the Academy Awards has gotten way too safe the last 20 years or so. They need to get back to honoring truly the best of the art form.

An exclusion I noticed was Last Year at Marienbad's nomination for the rather specific-sounding category of Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen. The whole movie is so strange and batty that I find its mention in the annals of the Academy a delight. Maybe it was left out because Criterion's edition is out of print? Now that I think about it, On the Waterfront is missing too. Strange...

Uh... never mind. I forgot that this rather impressive list spotlights foreign nominees and winners.

These are great films that don't need the validation of some silly awards.

It's missing few more... that Criterion has it as a part of the Collection. But the list highlights some of them !
