The Executioner: By the Neck By David Cairns
Designing for del Toro By Eric Skillman
The latest artwork by Criterion friend John Lurie—saxophonist in the erstwhile “fake jazz” outfit the Lounge Lizards, actor in such films as Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, and The Last Temptation of Christ, creator of the cult television series Fishing with John, indie-film score composer extraordinaire, and now painter—can be seen in the solo show The Invention of Animals, at Los Angeles’s Gallery Brown now through August 7. To promote this exhibit of large-scale, limited-edition pieces, Lurie recently sat down with Flavorpill editor Tanja M. Laden for a highly personal interview, called “Speaking with John,” at the Huffington Post. In it, he touches on his struggle with Lyme disease, the pain of no longer being able to create music, and his artistic process. Also, check out Lurie’s top ten Criterion selections here.
