There’s no time like late August for Ingmar Bergman’s lyrical Smiles of a Summer Night, and Madison’s UW Cinematheque is showing it tonight. Bergman’s delightful battle of the sexes screens as part of a special summer tribute to Roger Ebert, a series of films the late critic was particularly fond of. In it, four men and four women fall into a tangled web of attractions and betrayals during a country weekend in turn-of-the-century Sweden. Made shortly before Bergman became an international sensation with The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night is a rare lark from the iconic auteur. Watch the trailer below.
