Pop Goes June

The legendary Monterey International Pop Festival happened forty-five years ago this weekend. It featured one of the most amazing lineups ever—Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, the Who, the Mamas & the Papas, Ravi Shankar, and so many more. And the great documentarian D. A. Pennebaker captured its lightning in a bottle with the scorching film Monterey Pop. To celebrate this one-of-a-kind concert and movie, Cinefamily in Los Angeles is hosting a special screening on June 17, introduced by Lou Adler, one of the festival’s organizers, and the Mamas & the Papas’ Michelle Phillips. A Q&A will also follow. (Fresno, California, fans of the film are also in luck this weekend, as it will be screened for free at the Emerald Tablet on June 17.)

Check out the entire, immortal, seven-minute Hendrix performance, in which he lights his guitar on fire during “Wild Thing.” We especially love it when he kisses the guitar after dousing it with lighter fluid.
