The Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is currently celebrating one of the finest of all Hollywood actors with the retrospective A Burt Lancaster Centennial Tribute. This Saturday, July 20, you can catch an early breakout performance of Lancaster’s in the rough prison noir Brute Force. Thisexplosive film from director Jules Dassin, who was soon to be blacklisted, is a harrowingly violent interrogation of post–World War II America, pitting Lancaster’s stoic, essentially good-hearted prisoner against a fascistic warden, played by Hume Cronyn.
