A Criterion A Day...

Edit List

I've moved this list to Letterboxd because it was much easier to manage: A Criterion A Day

I have been collecting films in the Criterion Collection since the late 1980s when they released titles on laserdisc. As of August 2013, Criterion has released about 650 films on DVD and Blu-ray, and about 150 additional titles in their Eclipse series. (Eclipse is an imprint of Criterion which offers "a selection of lost, forgotten, or overshadowed classics in simple, affordable editions.") About 500 of those 800 titles can currently be streamed on Hulu Plus. In addition, Hulu Plus offers about 350 titles licensed by Criterion which have never been released on either Criterion or Eclipse DVD. So the total number of films in the Criterion Collection, on DVD and streaming, comes to about 1150 titles. As a film enthusiast with a special interest in foreign-language films, I've seen perhaps a quarter of the Collection (that's a rough estimate). I have almost 300 of them in my DVD collection. That leaves about 850 films in their collection which I've never seen. In order to view those remaining titles, which is my ultimate goal, I could watch one movie each week, but that would take about 17 years to complete. And since they are adding about 60 titles each year, I would never be able to catch up. But what if I could watch one movie a day from the Criterion Collection? That would allow me to see all of them in about three years, which includes any additional titles as they are released. That might seem like an impossible goal, but since the start of the project, about 60 days, I've watched 64 titles in the Collection, and that includes a week when I was on vacation and didn't watch anything! If I can keep up the pace, and if Criterion doesn't increase its output, I should be able to see every film in the Criterion Collection by the end of 2016. Of course, this is all predicated on my not having to purchase all of the non-streaming titles (approximately 300 titles currently.) If I'm fortunate many of these will become available to stream eventually. If not, I'll find other means to watch them, since I don't plan on spending a fortune to add all of the missing titles to my collection. (And at $30-$40 per title, it would take a fortune!)

Note: Those titles that are streamed only on Hulu Plus do not have listings on this website, so I was unable to link them. They are listed in the note section of the films that were watched on the previous day.
