Stephen H. Painter

I have been a Kinophile since 1972. The first "great" film I saw was "2001" during a rerelease in the early '70s. It is still my "greatest" film of all time. But I've seen thousands of films since then. My other favorite directors are Dreyer, Eisenstein, Lang, Welles, Mizoguchi, Bergman, Satyajit Ray, Antonioni, Godard, Tarkovsky, Herzog, Kubrick, and about a dozen or so others, all pre-70's. Time will only tell for Wong, Hou, Sokurov, Von Trier, Carax, Ceylan, Tarr & other recent directors.

  • Favorite director: Akira Kurosawa
  • Favorite Criterion edition: Seven Samurai
  • Most wanted in the collection: Napoleon vu par Abel Gance
