Bravo, Bruce!

It was announced this week that Rialto Pictures founder and Criterion friend Bruce Goldstein will receive the 2009 San Francisco International Film Festival Mel Novikoff award, “given annually to an individual or institution whose work has enhanced the filmgoing public’s knowledge and appreciation of world cinema.” As part of the celebration, the esteemed programmer and archivist will host “An Afternoon with Bruce Goldstein,” on Sunday, May 3, at the Castro Theatre, in which he will be interviewed onstage, present a reel of Rialto trailers, and then introduce a screening of Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria, a Rialto favorite.

Whether or not you can make it to the event, be sure to read J. Hoberman’s touching appreciation of Goldstein, “The Indispensable Man,” on the festival site.
