LAZY SUNDAY

Many of us have fond memories of sunny weekend jaunts to the country. But how many can boast spending those outings with Francis Ford Coppola and Akira Kurosawa? Only Wim Wenders, whose hiccup-fraught trip to Coppola’s Napa Valley home in the summer of 1978 with the legendary Japanese filmmaker is recalled in a sweet and surprising (hello, Les Blank!) reminiscence, accompanying an incredible photo, now at the Guardian online. (There’s Kurosawa, way in the left of the frame, still in his shirtsleeves and shoes while others enjoy swimming.) The photo is part of Once: Still Images of Moving Pictures, a Wenders exhibition on view at the U.K.’s Derby Art Gallery until April 13. Note to Wim: let’s see that photo of Kurosawa and the Cajun band soon!
