Cinematic Cteve

Award-winning writer, film historian, lifelong cinephile, longtime movie critic, devoted Criterion collector and doting father.

My personal film collection covers more than a century of cinema with nearly 4,000 titles, including 330+ Criterions. It is a happy day when another Criterion takes its proper place on my shelves with this ever-growing collection.

I am interested in films noir, German Expressionism, screwball comedies, virtually all French cinema, the restoration and preservation of silent films in particular, and the guilty pleasures of expensive American blockbusters unspooling on a big screen. I am in love with the cinema.

Longtime favorite directors, essentially in order, include Kubrick, Scorsese, Renoir, Hitchcock, Clouzot, Bergman, Kurosawa, Fellini, Welles, De Sica, Chaplin, Lindsey Anderson, Godard, Truffaut, Aldrich, Ford, Ozu, Pabst, Lang, Murnau, Antonioni, Buñuel, the Coen Bros., the Maysles Bros., Sam Peckinpah, Sam Fuller, Spielberg, and, more recently, Paul Thomas Anderson.

North by Northwest (1959) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) remain my favorite films after more than 35 years.

I also collect and enjoy reading books on film, including cinema history, in-depth analysis of specific pictures and academic studies of genre, as well as biographies of great actors and directors. My library contains several hundred such books and, like any serious collection that becomes more than a mere hobby, they are immensely satisfying to possess and peruse.

As part of the research for my film books, whenever possible I print copies of scripts available on the Internet and compare the final drafts while watching the films made from those screenplays. The resulting knowledge of narrative structure, pacing, character development and plotting is more valuable than anything I've learned from film courses. Try it.

I have a dangerous and evidently incurable addiction to drive-in pictures, exploitation/grindhouse fare and B-movies, particularly from the 1950s.

I can also connect myself to Citizen Kane in three steps.
