Here is a list of the Criterion films, which I have seen so far, and my opinions on them.
Honestly, while I do very much enjoy this movies stunning surrealist aesthetics, I still come out of the film with a lack of care for it. Though, again, I do very much enjoy the introspection.
It was boring, unfunny, and too ridiculous to be taken seriously. Personally, I do not think this was a very good introduction to Hitchcock.
I have a personal relationship with the issues presented in the film but I, personally, do not find them to strike a cord with me. Though, I give Truffaut credit for trying.
How did Michael Bay make a boring movie?
A beautiful masterpiece of a statement on capitalist life. The accuracy in which Kaurisamaki is able to present the real world is unbelievable and has rarely been matched.
I feel that this film is, in my opinion, an interesting premise handled poorly. There are completely undeveloped relationships pursued by unlikeable characters, which leads me to not care about anything in the film.
One of the greatest films from a brilliant director. Bicycle Theived makes both a statement on poverty and the fickleness of luck.
This is a movie that makes me wish it was done better. I mean, it is a good movie but I don't feel that it is as great as the ideals it symbolizes nor does it handle those ideals well. Honestly, I think Mala Noche is better. And, I also don't think making the audience more comfortable with Lesbian sex is justification for the amount of exploitation in the film.
Even though I dislike Wes, I feel this is a near perfect portrait of Sun Belt life and my favorite of his movies.
Every time I think about this movie, I find it better than the last time I thought about it. So, honestly while I find it funny and well made... I don't think it's one of my favorites, still like it though.
The movie happily claimed that it doesn't idolize Che Guevara... but it really does. I mean, I do enjoy this film but I still find it too much of a long haul to watch again. It was definitely worth the first watch, though.
Though, this is not one of my favorite Chaplin movies, Chaplin's brilliance is shown quite well here. I thought that the comedy and story were done well but I feel that the focus on poverty is not done as well.
This movie feels just kind of boring and random. I mean, the movie just seems to have nothing going for it that would make it interesting, to me at least. Though, I feel that the movie is not that bad or even that boring, I feel it just has nothing to draw a viewer in.
Possibly, my favorite of the New Wave films. This film uses all of the tropes of new wave cinema for a brilliant purpose, which contributes to the amazing moral message of this work, which, in my eyes, has rarely been matched if ever.
This is a film that is understandable for its importance but, after that, it just seems okay.
Though this is my favorite of del Toro's movies, I feel that all of the problems, which are present in his films are very present here. There is a strange and rather off-putting juxtaposition of child life and sexual imporoprity, which doesn't seem to work well or be for any sort of cinematic purpose. Though, I will admit that I did enjoy the effects and the uniqueness of the story.
Possibly, the greatest film about race ever made. Lee's ability to speak about this issue with such clarity, has made this my favorite movie, which I have ever seen thus far. I could go on for hours about the realism of the abundance of different characters (especially the Asian-americans who fight back against their own stereotype), the beauty of the film, the brilliance of the dialogue, the amazing acting, or the script, which sounds so real that it all sounds like it was said and recorded for a documentary but, to be short, let me simply say that this, to me, is the meaning of the word beauty.
I feel that the effect this film had on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival has been lost to time. Today, I feel the film just doesn't strike much of a cord with me.
By far, my favorite Kubrick film so far. This film is able to frame the ridiculousness of the Cold War in a way that both makes you afraid and amused at the same time. Truly, both a fantastic comedy and war film.
Sadly, the worse half of the duology. I felt that, while this film had its moments, it is easily surpassed by its sequel. Though, they do, much like Blue is the Warmest Color, feel like one complete movie rather than two.
I just did not like this at all. I mean, it feels as if this is the epidomy of what I do not like about Anderson's films, in the same way that Bottle Rocket is the epidomy of what I do like about Wes Anderson's films. This film feels like just another Hollywood novelty stop-motion film, which happened to be based on a book written by an openly anti-semetic man, who will never be held accountable for his anti-semetism. It's Hollywood at its most blatently terrible.
Who would have thought my favorite Rossellini film would be made in completely different country, with a different languege? But, that is what Germany Year Zero is. Here are all of Rossellini's trademarks, his focus on the acceptence of minorities and the effects of war on human kindness, without the long run time of his other films.
Even though I am not Catholic, I do deeply respect Saint Francis, much like a lot of people. But, then again, I feel as if this movie would only be enjoyed in the setting of a Sunday school with a teachers threat of playing something more boring if this were to be refused. Honestly, this film is, strangely for Rossellini, only really important for Christian viewers and has little to offer non-Christians. Oh, and it is really boring.
I feel this film is only slightly better than City Lights, simply because of its improved comedy but it is still not in my most favorite Chaplin films.
This film is simply just bleh. I mean, I applaud the filmmakers for inserting such an important message into the film but could they have also made the movie with an actual plot of any kind, rather than simply showing backstory-less characters reacting to the situation. Honestly, it is very hard to feel the pain of these characters when the film keeps switching back to two bums who go around shooting stuff for no given reason.
This is a film, which does have some merit but is held back by its focus on a character who would, in the real world, be given a restraining order and another character who straight up rapes and shames the character who would have been given this restraining order. Ugh, at least Simon and Garfunkel made the music for it.
For so long, this was my favorite movie of all time but then I saw Do The Right Thing. Though, this will, no matter what always be in my top five films because it is both beautiful and socially aware, with some of the greatest humor ever to be in a film. I, seriously, cannot put into words how much I love this movie.
This is another movie, where, despite the social commentary, which I do find admirable, the film feels like it could mostly be enjoyed for the music, which is fantastic by the way.
This is probably my least favorite Fellini movie. Honestly, the film feels far too long with far too unlikeable of characters. Though, I understand the point of showing the pointless nature of the wealthy, I feel it could have been pulled off far better.
By far my favorite Fellini movie. This film, though technically not neorealist, is, in my opinion, the closest Fellini has ever come to showing poverty. Even though it is not my favorite Italian film it is still one of my all time favorites because of the beauty this film radiates and its focus on imperfect characters who still deserve more than they have.
