I rank this much better than The 39 Steps, and agree with some that this is one of his best made in his homeland.

Godard plays with science fiction. All the elements I like about him are found here: critical questions about identity, language,humanity, and society. I'm fascinated by how visually dark the cinematography is, and how Godard makes his locations look a bit out of this world.

I don't watch horror films. But this is a B-film gem with a capital B. The organ score suits this not-really-scary film perfectly. The cinematography is beautiful, especially around the carnival. How much would I pay for that lost reel of film to be found? Eagerly waiting for the Blu-ray upgrade announcement.
This film is one of my top 3 favorite films. I'm so glad to own this now OOP treasure. This film was one of the two films I researched for my Honors Thesis. I've seen this about a dozen times, and it never gets old. Everything about this film just works. The finale is superbly engaging, and the last shot will always linger in my mind. A true classic.

Whether or not Lloyd did all of his stunts, the six-story climb at the end is, as my dad described, "toe-curling". A fun, light-hearted comedy, with a plodding plot, but memorable gags.

While not a horror fan or expert, I would describe this as a "bridge film" in the genre. It is not an explicitly "big scary monster" film of the Universal variety, nor is it the strictly "unseen psychological terror" flick of the Lewton-led RKO style. There are scary monsters, but the horror of a man with god-like powers brings a suspenseful fright to the viewer. Bottom line: Laughton's performance shines here.

In The Ascent there is also a descent. I appreciate the many moments Shepitko pauses to let the viewer gaze on an actor's face. We don't get snapshot reactions; we see slight fluctuations in expression. I think this is seen most clearly in the interrogator.
