4K digital transfers in Criterion

by Levi

Created 11/18/15

Edit List

I'll add each Criterion release/coming soon from a 4K digital transfer as it's announced (last update March 15, 2017).

I sorted Criterion's Films: Blu-ray list by spine number. Please add a comment below if I've missed anything. Thanks!

I can testify for the high quality of Criterion's ("mere") DVD editions from 4K and 2K transfers (e.g. THE NIGHT PORTER HD reissue from a 2K transfer; TOKYO STORY HD reissue from a 4K transfer). I wouldn't hesitate to buy any editions I am itching to own just because I don't have the latest/best quality viewing equipment. I've "double-dipped" a number of times and believe support (from us poor folk -- hopefully even more so for those with much more discretionary income) of Criterion and other art house distribution companies in any way possible is helping preserve masterpieces for future generations and keeping well-supplied CC fans very happy.

Many thanks for this great list along with the 2K list. Criterion needs to publicize their 4K and 2K discs! When I enter "4K" on the Amazon search box, very few of these titles came up. With more people purchasing 4K TVs and video projectors, the demand for such enhanced Blu-rays will only increase while everyone waits for true 4K discs. One addition to this list is Kurosawa's Ikiru, my favorite film of all time.

These are NOT 4k discs. 4k Blu Rays don't exist yet (the first batch will be released March 1st, 2016). They are a new type of disc that requires a new player. These are MASTERED in 4k. That is not the same thing. Yes, the 4k mastered ones will look better when up-scaled, but do NOT confuse them for actual 4k Blu Rays. I am really hoping Criterion makes an announcement soon about producing 4k discs, but as long as it took them to start doing Blu Rays, I'm not holding my breath (It was over two and a half years, for those that don't remember).

Thank you so much for the clarification. I cut 'n' pasted the transfer descriptions from each title's page in an attempt at accuracy, but as I am no expert I was so hoping someone would post to clarify just what "4K" means here! I know that even my Criterion DVDs look better from "2K" or "4K" transfers. Do you (does anyone) have a suggestion for a more accurate title for my 4K and 2K lists than "from digital transfers", or of a note I should add in the "intro."?

Great job putting this together! :) I think your title is fine (and I am an "expert" in this arena). I'm kinda holding off purchasing 4K editions just patiently waiting for when they will be true 4K discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range). I bet Criterion is waiting to see if the 4K UHD will take hold and do their best as usual when starting to produce 4K discs. What will the first 4K disc be? hmmm

Thanks Darmok! This so-non-expert guesses that the first "true 4K" Criterion releases will include THE 400 BLOWS and BREATHLESS.

I have ONE actual 4K UHD movie (Sicario) playing with an Xbox One S and displayed on an HDR 4K TV. It looks pretty good, but almost too good. I've reduced the so-called "Soap Opera" effect by cranking down the TrueMotion feature on my LG, but man oh man it's almost too analytical. The Criterion discs look great too so I'm not sure if Criterion needs to release actual UHD discs of their 4K remasters. I'd sure like to experience one though and proven wrong :)

If I could afford the best equipment I'd likely have it. I want to restate that for other poor folks out there: the newer DVD releases look very good and the library systems often carry Criterion titles. It is probably insane for me to purchase anything that's not food and it's a testament to my high regard for the art of Cinema that I continue to purchase discs. FilmStruck seems like a very good deal to this poor student.

Reeniop5 liked my list so I checked out his pages -- I also am excited to hear that the late Lino Brocka's MANILA IN THE CLAWS OF LIGHT (I saw it many years ago in re-release) will likely be released in 2017 by Criterion in its new 4K restoration. Just watched the trailer -- can't stop crying. Very happy to see that Reeniop5 is purchasing from the wonderful Eureka Masters of Cinema and others.

I just completed my yearly inventory. This year, I added the "digital intermediate" note on my titles. (My list is by film--not by the package that contains the film). I used your list to cross-ref mine, which I created by either reading the back of an unopened package or by reading the booklet of an opened one. Persona was interesting. The Criterion web says 2K but my booklet says 4K. You might also check the following titles: Antichrist; The Blob; Drive, He Said (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story); Easy Rider [Single & (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story)]; Five Easy Pieces [Single & (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story)]; Head (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story); Ivan's Childhood; Journey to Italy (3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman); King of Marvin Gardens (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story); The Last Picture Show (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story); PlayTime (The Complete Jacques Tat); Ride with the Devil; Robinson Crusoe on Mars; A Safe Place (America Lost and Found: The BBS Story); The Thin Red Line; Things to Come

Thank you PLexxiTronic for bothering to comment and make lists (here and under my "2K" list)! I'll check all of these out and adjust when I have more time.

There are two films in the "His Girl Friday" package that I opened and watched: 1) His Girl Friday. "This high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit DataCine film scanner from a 35 mm fine-grain master positive made from the nitrate original camera negative. Duplicate 35 mm material was used where the original negative was damaged." ; 2) The Front Page. "This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on an Oxberry wet-gate film scanner from a 35 mm safety print provided by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, College of Fine Arts' Department of Film and its Howard Hughes Collection, housed at the Academy Film Archive of Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Restoration was undertaken in 2016 by the Academy Film Archive and the Film Foundation, wth funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation."
