Wives/Muses

by Eric Levy

Created 03/11/14

Edit List

Male artists have been inspired by the fairer sex as far back as the Venus of Willendorf. Several filmmakers have continued this tradition and cast their wives/partners in some of their best films. Here is a list of the ones I can think of. I'm sure I'm missing some. Please let me know. Muse names are listed after the film(s) they appear in.

Because Chaplin's muses (#2) are a bit confusing, I've included his films in chronological order (by feature) and listed the muse(s) for each disc.

Fassbinder's muses (#38) are even more confusing. His films are also listed chronologically with muse names—male and female—listed after each feature.

UPDATE: 8/29/15: When I created this list, I had only found female muses for male directors. Recently male muses/partners have been added for Fassbinder and Cocteau. I considered re-titling the list "Partners/Muses," but since it is now somewhat "established" on the Criterion website, and since it would be nearly impossible to re-name all of my cross-references, I am leaving the title and my first paragraph intact. But the list is of course inclusive of all muses and directors regardless of gender or orientation.

Very special thanks, and deepest gratitude, to my collaborators on this list: Brown, Collection, Kilianf286, prtkahn (whose Great Collaborations list was an inspiration for this one), and TruffautBergman (whose Vertebræ By Vertebræ: Leading Ladies list makes a great adjunct to this one).

Cross-references to my other lists are included in the notes.

Personal statistics: S=Seen, D=Own on DVD, B=Own on Blu-ray Disc, *=non-Criterion edition. Totals: Films 105 (including THE RINK and KILLER'S KISS), Seen 75, Own 47, DVDs 24, BDs 32.

Thank you once again. Accuracy is very important to me, and you've helped me maintain it so much on so many of my lists. My deepest gratitude. Cool that I got to add Ray/Grahame too!

Kilian, it looks like you got blocked. This happened to me a while ago, and it seems to be happening a lot lately. The website spam blockers work a little too hard sometimes. Contact Jon Mulvaney, and let him know what's going on. If you don't hear from him, try Janet Hicks: hicks (at) criterion (dot) com. They should be able to fix things.
