New Year's Day

by Collection

Created 02/06/14

Edit List

Once a year since 2010, The Criterion Collection affords visitors to its website around the New Year's holiday a peek behind the curtain in terms of things to come. The following list is representative of titles portrayed in the New Year cartoon by Jason Polan which have since materialised as proper releases. For those who haven't yet subscribed to the Criterion newsletter, it is worth noting that there is a "drip" of hints once a month, almost all of which are listed here.

Why was 2014 a banner year in terms of new releases at Criterion?
• Critic's choice: The Great Beauty (won Best Foreign Language Oscar® only weeks before its Criterion release), Blue is the Warmest Color, Persona, and La Dolce Vita
• Long-anticipated titles join the Collection: Breaking the Waves, Eraserhead, Scanners, and Y tu Mamá También
• Something for the soundtrack enthusiast: A Hard Day's Night, Fantastic Mr. Fox, All that Jazz, The Big Chill, and Jacques Demy's œuvre
• A Comedy Tonight: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World, Tootsie, Criterion's first Almodóvar, and Jacques Tati's œuvre

It is noteworthy that 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 cartoons all depict bodies of water. May we attribute this to a mere coincidence, a pictorial constraint of referenced work (e.g. Breaking the Waves, On the Waterfront) or could this hint at an underlying theme? As Mr Levy points out in the comments, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017 all have clocks as a device. 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016 all have vehicles: motorcycles and/or cars.

Thanks for the peer review and it is nice having another set of eyes to quality check my information. I believe that our 16 January comments established Phoenix as being a duplicate hint and you are correct about Repo Man. Therefore, the former last sentence was deleted as it was vestigial from our meditations on New Year's/Newsletter hint exclusivity of 2015. I guess that Easy Rider already being in the Collection isn't the type of hint that I've included (upgrades being excluded from the above). Now that you mention it, without returning to '13, I recall a window being The Kid for many and that has been added.

Have you seen today's Newsletter hint? Sheesh! In addition to being the most obvious clue ever, it seems like now we're getting tons of overlap between our lists. Not sure how I feel about that. It must be the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify!

Thanks for welcoming me back from the dark side. It's been a slow go catching up as you can imagine. Good looking out and you'll be happy to know that you set 'em up and Mulvaney knocked 'em down.

Hey Colly! I wonder now if the kid in front of the motorcycle in the 2016 comic could be a reference to BOYHOOD. Long shot. Your call.

It's a good call and consistent with past practice, let's go ahead and keep it up there in the absence of any other corresponding announcement. I appreciate your stopping by and hope that you're enjoying this hot summer!

Hey Colly. Think I missed your last response. I have been enjoying this summer. Back to work on Monday :-( Couple questions: With this month's updates, it looks like we're complete on the 2016 additions now. Is there anything I'm missing? Also, where are ONE-EYED JACKS in the 2015 comic and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE in the 2014 one?

It was guessed that The Fisher King caught One-Eyed Jacks and the Adam Sandler character, Barry, from Punch-Drunk Love danced on the beach in 2015 and 2014, respectively. Best of luck with the back to school today!

Hi Colly. There's a theory on the Criterion Forum that the kid in front of the motorcycle in the 2016 comic is not a reference to OLIVER TWIST, as some had suggested, but to RUMBLE FISH, which got hinted in yesterday's newsletter. Haven't seen that one, so I can't say, but it sounds plausible, especially since an OT upgrade hasn't materialized. One month to the next one!

I got excited when I deciphered the Rumble Fish hint in this month's newsletter and will take the Criterion Forum speculation surrounding the Happy New Year! 2016 cartoon under advisement once the release is announced. Besides the March 2017 releases to be announced later this week, I also have my fingers crossed that we get our New Year Cartoon on the Eve once again. Season's greetings to you and yours.

NYE not NYD again! Looks like your finger crossing worked! And looks like a pretty exciting year! If the guesses are right about STALKER, I'll be out of my mind. My all-time favorite film!

Hey, thanks for stopping by on the occasion of the 2017 cartoon and Happy New Year, amigo! I will be rooting for Stalker to be added for your sake. I couldn't help but notice your pointing out A Wedding being thrown around Criterion Forum and was just curious what element(s) of the cartoon led to said speculation?

The S and the R look a bit like a bride a groom. Kinda odd cartoon this year. Looking forward to your list being populated though!

Hey! So exciting to be able to populate the newest list so soon! Couple things: Some people felt that the band on the beach in the 2014 comic was a reference to BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB. So, as awesome as that title looks as your banner image, you may want to move it down to the honourable mention section. Also, I think the noodles that Jeanne Dielman is chopping in the 2017 comic are a TAMPOPO reference, so you still get a title for the latest list and a cool banner image. Getting to work on all of my lists...

Good call, Eric, and I have made the suggested revisions. I recognised Tampopoas a 2017 cartoon reference, but must have overlooked its inclusion above was busy screening a film at home not to mention that I was delighted to have a title to add to Guess Who's Coming to dinner. Glad to see you get your Newsletter Hints Rumble Fish, among other announcements, and here's hoping you're well!

Hey Colly. The box with the question mark next to the clock in the 2017 comic seems to be a hint for MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON. And I know you don't like to do Blu-ray upgrades on this list, but JEANNE DIELMAN is hinted at in this year's comic as well. That's four NYD titles revealed in one month! Pretty cool. And OTHELLO was an incredible surprise!

Hi Colly. Thanks for the kind thoughts on my NFR list. I'm so happy about that. I've wanted that particular list in the top spot since I made it. Very gratifying. Cool you got to add THEY LIVE BY NIGHT to this one. I believe the popular guess was that CEASAR wearing a FANNY pack is a reference to THE MARSEILLES TRILOGY. So another to cross off :-)

Nice to see STALKER as your banner image for this list. It will be for my I Caved list soon too. Incredible announcements yesterday. I'm ecstatic about all of them!

I like how you've featured it as the banner image for your I Caved list! Since sorting the above list in descending order, I like to settle on a banner image for the year and I can safely say Stalker is it. Take care, amigo!
