Lions in Winter

Some of cinema’s most revered directors enjoyed extraordinary bursts of creative energy during their twilight years, delivering films that showcase a mastery of the craft they had honed over their long careers. This week on the Criterion Channel, our eight-film series Lions in Winter brings together an international selection of late-period works, including Wise Blood, John Huston’s powerful adaptation of the Flannery O’Connor novel; L’argent, Robert Bresson’s Cannes award–winning exploration of greed and corruption; and An Autumn Afternoon, Yasujiro Ozu’s tender domestic drama about the loneliness of an aging widower grappling with a rapidly changing world.
