• For Guy Maddin, Winnipeg, the city in which he was born and raised, is also a place that exists largely in his mind. His film My Winnipeg is made up of both facts and fantasies—both related in the vernacular of documentary cinema, and narrated by the filmmaker himself—and it’s left up to the viewer to decide which is which. To get a taste of Maddin’s singular cinematic vision, here’s a scene from the movie in which we discover that Winnipeg has “ten times the sleepwalking rate of any other city in the world.” Believe what you will.
