• For this week’s festival of free films on Hulu, French Wartime Cinema, we’ve highlighted movies from one of the twentieth century’s darkest periods. These classics were all made in France while World War II was raging across Europe, some under German occupation, and they all are fascinating, stirring depictions of the human soul. The selections include Marcel Carné’s Children of Paradise and Les visiteurs du soir; Jean Grémillon’s Remorques, Lumière d’été, and Le ciel est à vous; Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game; and Maurice Tourneur’s Le main du diable.

Also on offer is Jean Dellanoy’s Eternal Return, starring Jean Marais and Madeleine Sologne in a Jean Cocteau–scripted tragic romantic fantasy. An update of the Tristan and Isolde story, Dellanoy’s film was a huge hit in France in 1943. This rarely screened work is not available in the U.S. on disc, but you can watch it below or at Hulu. And remember, if you sign up for Hulu Plus for just $7.99 a month, you can see these and hundreds of other Criterion films commercial-free, anytime.
