The Immortal Story: Divas and Dandies By Jonathan Rosenbaum
10 Things I Learned: A Taste of Honey By Elizabeth Pauker
Things are getting a little hairy in this week’s festival of free Criterion films on HuluPlus—we celebrate the movie mustache with five ticklish selections. Bristly upper lips are characters in their own rights in these titles: Marcel Carné’s masterpiece Children of Paradise, featuring Pierre Renoir as the mustachioed dandy criminal Larcenaire; the biopic Rembrandt, starring an incorrigible Charles Laughton; Pietro Germi’s black-comic Divorce Italian Style, with a twitchy Marcello Mastroianni; and François Truffaut’s Jules and Jim, in which Jeanne Moreau becomes one of the boys at one point by whimsically painting on some facial hair. Of course, the most famous movie mustache of all is the one worn by Charlie Chaplin. This week, we’re offering his tearjerking comedy classic The Kid, not yet available from Criterion on DVD or Blu-ray. Watch it below, or at Hulu, for free. Be sure to browse through Criterion’s hundreds of other titles on HuluPlus, and sign up for just $7.99 a month to see them all!
