Michael and Marty

A new, restored print of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes is premiering in Cannes tonight, with Martin Scorsese going onstage to introduce it. So what’s the big Scorsese-Powell connection anyway? Well, you can learn all about it in an informative new article in the Guardian by Steve Rose, which charts Scorsese’s relationship with the British master, from admiring his films in his youth to meeting him in 1975, after Powell had become persona non grata in the industry, and then encouraging his friendship with other American filmmakers, such as Francis Ford Coppola, who brought him on as senior director-in-residence at his Zoetrope Studios. There are all sorts of fascinating tidbits in Rose’s piece, including Powell’s guiding influence on the production of Raging Bull.
