  • I usually like to see the original before the remake. Unfortunately, I saw the Nolan version of this film, before Skjoldaerg's. This film does a great job of building suspense while the lead protagonist mind starts to deteriorate due to lack of sleep. Skarsgard is brilliant and skjoldbjaerg does a great job creating suspense with subtlety. Find this on DVD.

  • Not one of my favorites but it's one that is thought-provoking. After a man's lover disappears, he begins to have an affair with his lover's best friend while they search for her. However, it is so much more then that as the film explores different meanings of love and a study of different class systems. Find on Hulu Plus or DVD.

  • I wasn't a big fan of fellini's Amarcord, so i though this film was going to be bad. However, I was surprised by masina's performance as a prostitute who is looking for companionship. It breaks you heart knowing that Cabiria just wants to have a normal loving relationship like normal people, but is destine to be alone. This film is out of print.

  • This film about a strain relationship between a mother and a daughter will not excite you with action. But it will attack your mind with it's honesty and emotional ride. Ingrid Bergman does a fantastic job going from a variety of emotions that do not seem far fetched.

  • A great monty python film. I love the humor, sets, and costumes. However, I felt that the jokes got stale towards the last half of the movie. Find this gem on DVD.

  • When a film is known for it's eroticism, it usually ends up being a film without substance. However, Kaufman's film makes it seem artful and purposeful with it's relation to politics, freedom, and relationships. For a three hour long movie, it did not seem that long and made me appreciate the complexity of the film.

  • Blood of a poet – this first entry is short but powerful with its symbolism and underlying motifs. If you consider yourself and artist, you will be able to appreciate the complexity and beauty of this film.
Orpheus – Cocteau continues with his theme of the poet and spins it into the Orpheus legend. This film plays out smoother than blood of a poet, but he continues to invent new motifs and use continuing ones from blood of a poet.
Testament of Orpheus – Cocteau concludes his theme of the poet in the wonderful film. This film completes the circle of the poet and his tortious relationship with his creations. It was nice to see some of the replaying symbolism in this film that continued with the other two films. Also be on the lookout for some familiar artist from Pablo Picasso, to Yul Brynner

  • Crude, violent, and a good message? This film is a satire to violence in media with it's documentary film style. The film does has a great balance of under and over distancing the audience. If you can sit though the whole film, you will feel violated but it will also make you look at media violence a bit differently.

  • The difficult part of watching this movie is to separate the story of Christ in the Bible from Nikos Kazantzakis's the last temptation of Christ. Once you do that you see a good story of the struggle of flesh and spirit. the acting is great and the score by Peter Gabriel pulls you into the movie.

  • Bergman's film on Mozart's Opera is a delight to watch. Even though he films the opera on stage, he films it in such a way you forget you are watching a stage performance. If you are a fan of operas you will love this film.

  • David Lean's film of Noel Coward's play Still Life highlights the emotions of an illicit romance. Howard and Johnson do a great job of slowly developing feelings for eachother while struggling with the consequences they are making.

  • Most Comedy Films today rely on crude language and themes. However, W.C. Field's film is funny on the gags and comedic timing. I found myself laughing at all the gags (even though i could see it coming), because the timing was so great. A must watch if you are a fan of abbott and costello, laurel and hardy, and the three stooges.

  • After seeing the bank dick, I thought it would be good to indulge in the comedic genius of W.C. Fields. looking at his early films, to his notorious films, you see how great of a slapstick comedian he was and his timing is impeccable.

  • Another great Fellini film. Actually, it is his first film! For his debut, it is interesting to see his love for quirky characters, that we see in his future films and his love for performance characters that i have previously seen in "Night of Cabiria" and "And the Ship Sails On

  • This film by Lang is just as suspenseful as his other films. I love the starkness of the black and white color and each suspenseful scene is acted with pure fright. This film will keep you attention from start to finish. A must see.

  • Badlands is what you get when violence and poetry collide. Sheen and Spacek have great chemistry, and Malick directing is simply eloquent as he mixes violent scenes with some tender moments.

  • Alexander Nevsky is such a great film from Sergei Eisenstein. This film has great sound and the battle scenes would put braveheart to shame. A must see if you love epic battle scenes.

  • Laurence Olivier's Hamlet is a great masterpiece to watch. from the dark, foggy scenes to the superb acting from everyone. Olivier does a great job diving into the mind of Dane. No wonder this won best picture.

  • Ivan the terrible Parts 1 & 2 is a great reflection of the troubled 16th century tsar who tried to unite Russia. What makes this film so great is it's reflection on Joseph Stalin's politics. Eisenstein does a great job with directing this piece and I also love the changes in colors during Part II.

  • Black Narcissus is considered by Powell the most erotic film he has ever made. Even though this film has (nearly) no nudity at all, the underlying sexual tension is woven throughout the film. it is a struggle for the nuns between faithfulness and the desires of the flesh. it is a good story that shows us the struggle that we face daily between faith and flesh.

  • Another Great film from Powell and Pressburger. Not only is it a romantic film, it also is a story about anti-materialism and how sometimes the best laid plans are not always the best.

  • A sad film that focus on a romance in a 1950s small town. Jane Wyman is a wealthy widow who falls in love with Rock hudson who is a gardener. This film focuses on loneliness, and the battle between what you want in life vs. what other people want for your life. For an older film, it does hit on a lot of themes that we deal with today.

  • Another great film by Douglas Sirk. It is a tale about lost and how every single character has some experience of loss. Just when you think things will turn around for the better, the characters end up sabotaging themselves and causing further loss. All of the actor's do an amazing job of displaying a range of emotions.

  • Racial Tension is woven through out this spike lee film. As the temperature get's hotter each day, so does the racial tension. as controversial this film was in 1989, it still is as relevant today as it was then. What makes this film so special is these moments of reconciliation amongst the racial tension, and racism from all races not just whites against blacks.

  • I'm not much of a Rolling Stones fan, and I do not think you can call this the greatest rock film ever. However, I do appreciate this rock-doc about The Stones notorious 1969 tour. This film shows the stones and the trouble they had trying to get this free concert at Altamont Speedway, to the trouble they had at the venue with the fans and the Hell's Angels. It really shows the unraveling and disillusionment of a generation

  • Ugg. How this made the criterion collection is a mystery. This movie is so bland. The only redeeming quality of this film is the fun opening credits, and the range of emotions played by the actors. However, the characters are so one side, you get bored very easily.

  • A fun DVD to watch. You really get to see the interesting perspective that the Beastie Boys had when making their videos (sci-fi, to gritty cop genre). You can also see different angles, remixes, and other sweet gems on this DVD.

  • I have always had a soft spot for Eastern Cinema. This film, adapted from a book, and a kabuki play, is shot and performed beautifully. The theme of breaking away from social structures and trying to find love in a hopeless scenario plays well with the beauty.

  • Surprisingly, I have not seen this movie previously, even though it was recommended to me years ago by my father. The only huge hollywood epic i have seen was Ben-Hur, so i came into watching this movie with that might set, and I'm glad I did. This movie is so shocking with it's sexuality, and violence. Kubrick does a great job of not shying away from each controversial shot. I also love the acting from Douglas, Oliver, and Ustinov, who play their characters with passion.

  • A hard movie to watch. This film makes yo identify and feel sorry for the protagonist, and yet feel cheated when he does these horrible acts of violence. Be Careful when watching this movie, it will through your emotions off.

  • This film has heart in the midst of darkness. Bob Hoskins, plays a loser who is employed as a chauffeur to a high-class call girl. He journeys through the london underworld, in trying to find love. Neil Jordan does a great job in exploring love as a weakness. Hoskins and Tyson have great chemistry and michael caine is just brilliantly evil.

  • It seems like any russian director has to do a film about russian history. Josef von sternberg focuses on catherine the great's rise to power. Marlene Dietrich does a great job portraying Catherine from her childlike innocence to a cold heir.

  • My First Jacques Tati film, and it is so funny. A lot of slapstick and satire throughout the film that will keep you memorized.

  • Another Tati classic. In Mon Oncle, we see M. Hulot being as lovable and curious as ever. Not only is this film comical in its humor, but a good message of being free vs. being a slave to technology.

  • Another great Tati film starring his Hulot character. This film still follows the same themes in Mon Oncle, but takes it to the next level. Great commentary on living in a technological modern world.

  • Such a funny satire on your typical "perfect heist" films. the comedy in this film is spot on which lead me laughing constantly throughout the film.

  • A interesting comedy with a sociological message.

  • A nice Noir heist film that is full of suspense and humor.

  • Kurosawa does a great job with blending tension, action, and comedy in this remarkable film. Toshiro Mifune is as great as ever.

  • A dark, yet tasteful fim from Luis Bunuel. He doesn't shy away from the dark areas of rape, murder, fetishism, bigotry and shines in in the fascist culture in which he was from.

  • Preston Sturges does it again with this heartfelt comedy about hardships, relationships, and social status.

  • Such a brilliant, endearing comedy about friendship in chaos.

  • One of the most funniest, thought provoking, random films I have seen. Bruce Robinson does it again with this wonderful film starring Richard E. Grant.

  • Such an odd, and hilarious british comedy. Perfect for the daydreamers to watch.

  • An interesting documentary looking at the life of a bible salesman. Not only do you get a personal look at all the salesman and the art of their profession, but you also get to see the ups and downs of the salesman life.

  • Probably one of the most interesting, and disturbing documentaries I have seen.

  • Film is an art form when you can watch a piece and it can have different interpretations. Wim Wenders film is a masterpiece for anyone to enjoy.

  • Such an intense movie on religious and social levels. Each actor portrayed their characters well and Dreyer's directing is absolutely wonderful.

  • Such a breath taking movie. Dreyer's vision mashed with Munk's play, is simply a work of art that goes beyond what we can conceive in our minds.

  • Another great Dreyer film. A woman who is searching for love but can not find it is a classic modern tragedy in the hands of a master of cinema.

  • A great film highlighting the genius of Carl Theodor Dreyer

  • Another great french prison escape movie. Not only do you see the hard work and processing in the escape, but the emotions that come with it.

  • Such an amazing film about two slovakian citizens who are bonded together and torn apart by fascism.
