Love is in the air at this week’s festival of free Criterion films on Hulu Plus. The selection of classic lighter-than-air romances includes Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard’s adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, David Lean’s Summertime, Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night (which later became the Stephen Sondheim musical A Little Night Music), and Alexander Korda’s rarely seen Wedding Rehearsal. A particularly alluring entry in the series is René Clair’s I Married a Witch, an effervescent supernatural comedy starring Fredric March as a politician who literally falls under the spell of a lusty, comically vengeful sorceress with a taste for waffles, played by Veronica Lake. (Portraying a sultry woman of mystery affords the gorgeous leading lady a plum showcase for that peek-a-boo hairstyle.) Watch this delightful romantic comedy—not currently available on DVD or Blu-ray—below, or at Hulu, for free. And be sure to browse through Criterion’s hundreds of other titles on Hulu Plus—you can sign up for just $7.99 a month to see them all!
