• March is Akira Kurosawa month at Criterion. On the twenty-third, the great Japanese filmmaker would have been one hundred years old. For this centennial celebration, we will be posting trivia questions and other contests all month, and giving away a different prize every weekday.

    Today’s prompt:

Which of the seven samurai are you most like? Which would you most like to be like?

Please respond by commenting below, and we’ll choose our favorite at the end of the day. You must leave a valid e-mail address to be eligible for the prize (a $50 gift certificate to criterion.com).

Toshiro Mifune's Kikuchiyo (Master of Thousand Worlds, or somn like that). i completely identify w/him because of him not fitting in, identifying w/farmers, falsifying Samurai records to make himself a "fake samurai" but most of all. he was an orphan, just like the baby he carried on the river as the water mill was burning in the background =). but most of all, i would have liked to be even more clown-ish the way he is.

I am very similar to Kyuzo, being rather serious when it comes to business and I always spend time preparing and debating over moves (often switching my mind from time to time), but as for the samurai who I would most like to be Kikuchiyo because I love Toshiro Mifune's arrogant portrayal of this character.

Oh, I have a strong resemblance with Kambei. My calm serenity is widely known. Strangely enough, when asked, my wife pointed out Kikuchiyo as the closest. Can you believe it. I lack a tad of coolness, though, so I would have to go for Kyuzo. ;)

I'm definitely Heihachi Hayashida, the good natured (if less skillful) samurai. I'll pour drinks, chop wood, and crack jokes. Gorobei Katayama: Have you killed many enemies? Heihachi Hayashida: [he splits another log] I usually run away. That's me.

I would choose Kikuchiyo to be like...he spoke his mind, aspired to be better, and became the bridge that brought the samurai and the farmers together. I guess I am the most like Heihachi...maybe not the very best, but always willing to raise everyone's spirits.

Of all of the Seven Samurai, I can honestly say I am most like Kikuchiyo. Like Kikuchiyo I am an extremely volatile person who can snap back and forth from mood to mood. Also like Kikuchiyo I am a person you do not forget upon meeting due to our boisterous personality and buffoonery . We are also both humorous souls with sometimes darker moods. Both Kikuchiyo have a terrible need to be incredibly impulsive as well. Finally the most admirable trait I feel we both share is loyalty and devotion to our friends, even though we can often deliver sarcastic remarks and put our foot in our mouths, we mean well. The Samurai I would most like to have been like is Kyuzo. As a child I have watched many movies and often envied the type of man who could be classified as the "strong and silent type." Few people are so well able to have true talent like Kyuzo and be humble as well. Kyuzo is the ultimate "team player" and do the right thing. He exercises great discipline in his every day life which unfortunately, is a trait I lack, and strongly desire.

Shimada - start with this quote: "You embarrass me. You're overestimating me. Listen - I'm not a man with any special skill but I've had plenty of experience in battles -losing battles, all of them. In short, that's all I am. Drop such an idea for your own good. " Like me entering this contest I'm so unlikely to actually win... because really, I'm not going to win. There are more clever people entering than me. And so many of them too. Am I humble yet?

I wish I could say Kikuchiyo for his free spirit, or especially Kambei for his level-headed-ness (if that is remotely a word), but truth be told, I find my reflection in Heihachi Hayashida. He's the cheerful one that when all the chips are down or even in a mildly somber mood, he brightens up the group with good feelings. Plus he's really good at chopping wood, :) It was this character I most liked as well when I first saw the film.

Probably Katsushiro because I'm still learning about the world around me and why people do the things they do. Also, I can tend to get over excited about little silly things, kind of like Katsushiro when he is hitting the Samurai with the stick. I'd like to be a mix between Kambei or Kyuzo. Kambei is a terific leader and I like that he isn't obsessed with the appearance of being a Samurai (ie, shaving his head) but is more about the moral choices, and ideas of being a Samurai. Kyuzo because he is a master at what he does, and yet doesn't think so highly of himself that he won't help those who need help.

This is a very difficult question. I would probably be Shichiroji because if I truly believe in something/someone, I would follow them blindly. People say I'm trustworthy, reliable, and when the going gets tough, I always manage to survive in the end. I would love to become somebody like Kambei, who's a strong, selfless leader, that is also wise and understanding. Kyuzo is badass too but he doesn't drink.

Heihachi. Even in times of war, desperation, and sadness, I'd like to bring a smile to people's faces, to lighten their heavy, heavy loads. Hey, I can live on millet too! I can chop wood (even if it wreak havoc on my soft, ladylike hands)! I can drink sake and the black-and-white film will cover up how red-faced I get! But mostly, I'd prefer everyone to get along and have a good time. Also: most likely to get shot in the back by a bandit.

I'd have to go with Heihachi Hayashida, even though (SPOILER ALERT!) he's the first to die in the movie. But, hey, I'll sacrifice for the sake of believability. He's not the most skilled samurai of the bunch, and I've never held a sword in my life. So chances are that I'd be the first to die in real life too.

I'm most like Katsushiro -- hesitant, inexperienced, filled with romantic notions about how the world works. Or maybe like Heihachi, filled with more humor than skill, but fun to have around. But the one I'd want to be is Kyuzo -- quietly brilliant, unbeatably skilled and noble in surprising ways.

I would say I am most like Kambei as he has a quiet strength and intellect that brings together and holds the seven together. He knows how to tap into each of them to bring out their strengths and being in management I can relate to that. Nietzsche said that which does not kill you makes you stronger...and you can see that Kambei. I would like to be like Kikuchiyo who is free of the social constraints of the other samurai and just lives by his own idea of self and who he wants to be and should be.

Though I lack his obvious skill, I think I'm most like Kyūzō in attitude and action. I certainly share his desire to take matters into my own hands, as he does when he makes his well-calculated solo raid on the bandits. While I doubt I would be capable of succeeding the way Kyūzō does, I could see myself making the attempt. Also, I tend towards being taciturn and cerebral, traits Kyūzō displays with his knack for silently planning his every move.

Though I'm happy this way, I woudn't mind being a bit more like Kyuzo. He has a certain weight and wisdom that would probably make more sense for me, being a graduate student and all.

I am amazed that not everyone have mentioned Kikuchiyo, I though it would be everyone's favorite. He's the one everyone fell in love with, like noir characters, Shakespeare heroes, or some other miserable guy invented by Chekhov, with a darker side like Norman Bates, Travis Bickle or A character from Camus stories. How can you choose anyone else?

Heihachi Hayashida. Sometimes, the most important thing you can do is help your friends keep their heads. A level head and a quick wit have saved many a conversation for me. I seem to have a real talent for lightening the mood when dour and for encouraging those around me. So what if I'm not the most skilled swordsman? As long as I can split logs, right?

At this point in my life, I suppose I am the most like Katsushirou. I admittedly know little about and have little experience with life and love, much like Katsushirou, but I also have great ambition and, I like to think, potential. I am just a 19-year-old film student, and even though I have no experience in filmmaking, I know it's what I want to do. That being said, I want to be most like Kyuuzou, because he of his deft abilities, though I can't say I'd like to be as serious as he is.

I think of myself like Kyuzo. I don't mess round with trivialities or bother with small talk. Most people don't know how to act around me, nor me around them. I just like to cut through the chatter, go out on my own, and get s--- done. I'd rather be like Kambei. He's experienced, yet he knows how to listen to people. He's an intelligent leader and he can get people to rally around his cause.

I'm most like Heihachi Hayashida.... because I always try to use my sense of humor to bring happiness and put smiles on the faces of those who are handling adversity in their lives. I think I'd most like to be like Kikuchiyo, a samurai wannabe who ends up proving their worth while also sympathizing with those around them and what they are going through.

I'd say I am most like Heihachi Hayashida: content to get by on my charm ("and good looks," ummm, not so much), fully aware that it could get me through the rough situations where my abilities are sub-par. And who wouldn't want to be Kikuchiyo...the raging id.

I'd say I'm more Kikuchiyo than anything else. Like him, I don't really fit into groups, I admire from afar, and I have no real talent, so I make up for it by cracking wise. But I also come through for others when the situation calls for it. I may not be the hero or the ladies man, but I'll be the one you can rely on when the going gets tough. I'd most like to be Heihachi. I'd say he's just a few steps up from Kikuchiyo, but commands the respect of his peers. I want to make sure I can still put a smile on someone's face, even though everything around them is falling apart.

I feel I most resemble the quiet and contemplative Kyūzō: often debating with himself over the matters at hand; firm in his opinion yet not too stubborn to concede to a better idea. I aspire to be closer to Kambei as I'm certain the more people embrace his altruism, the better the world would be for it.

I wish that I could say I was most like Kyūzō--the consumate swordsman and samurai whose last action would be to cast away the arms he held so closely during life, but the real answer for me is Katsushirō. Like Katsushirō, I am in awe of Kyūzō, but I can only aspire to be like him. In the mean time I'd fall in love with a farm girl that is dressed like a boy.

Most Like : In terms of my passion, Kikuchiyo. But more closely I would be Shiciroji; loyal to my friends no matter the cost. Most Want to be Like : I'd also like to say Kyuzo here if only for his patient dedication and obvious proficiency at his craft, but would opt for Kanbe - willing to sacrifice oneself for a noble cause, a leader of men, and a skilled swordsman/archer to boot! (And as a bonus I could look badass with no hair)

I definitely identify most with Kikuchiyo based on his headstrong nature, eagerness to prove himself and sympathy with the working class villagers. Even to his last breath, he is willing to fight for what he believes in and dies to protect the villagers. I'd prefer to be more like Kambei Shimada, as he is sage-like and demonstrates an unshakable calm, always keeping a cool head about him and seems to be a very clear influence on Star Wars' Yoda.

Right now in my life I'd say a mix in-between Kikuchiyo and Kanbê. Kikuchiyo for his pure energy and child like tendencies, however when morel is low I can rise to the occasion and build my friends spirits up. The Kanbê part of me is the fact that I can stand back and have good judgment while observing others for their merits and complexities. Right now I'm fine with who I am, but later in age I would like to become more like Kanbê. Making wiser decisions while becoming a better observer in people and the thing's they do, while taking a more calm approach to things I have to deal with throughout my daily life.

I am most like KIKUCHIYO, because I love hopping around, making weird noises, laughing crazily, and barking like a hound....especially when things are getting serious. Also KIKUCHIYO is who I'd like to be no matter what...especially when he unites the samurai together with the flag on top of the roof. I will do that someday...no, I will do that today.

Kikuchiyo, some consider him to be the comic relief but I see him as someone who goes to the beat of his own drum, much like myself. I'd most like to be like Kambei Shimada mostly because he is very wise and a totally badass monk impersonator.

I am like Shimura's character. He is always calm, cool, and wise. But me and Kurosawa both now but that gets old sometimes. To opposite Shimura, Kurosawa brilliantly created Mifune's character. I would like to be like Mifune who is spontaneous and either too courageous to be foolish... or too foolish to be courageous. :]

I am most like Katsushiro. I'm easily infatuated and most of all, I am eager to learn like he is, however I am also untalented. Katsushiro does get better at being a samurai at the end, but I'm most like him at the beginning. I have great passion for many things, but I am simply unable or not quick enough to do them, but I keep trying and maybe one day I will succeed. I would most like to be like Kambei. I suppose the choice that would be obvious from my first answer would be Kyuzo, but I would not like to be exactly like him. Kambei is wise and talented, but he is also warm and loving towards his "family". I really like that. Kyuzo likes all of the samurai of course, but he is very closed off and cold and that is not what I want to be. Kambei represents my ultimate goal in life, to be kind, wise and talented.

Definitely Heihachi. My sense of humor has always been one of my strongest defense mechanisms, and I've used it to get me out of more trouble than I care to remember and/or share on the internet. My humor and wit may be a bit darker than Heihachi's, but I think that works better for my personality. As for who I'd most like to be, I suppose it'd be a mix both of Heihachi and Kyuzo. I don't like the thought of surrendering my sense of humor to be taken seriously, but I admire Kyuzo's consummate sense of duty and professionalism. I'm by no means a class clown or anything, but people (wrongly) don't consider me a serious or dedicated worker. So I suppose I'd most like to be the wise-cracking Heihachi who can still command the respect that Kyuzo does.

I am probably most like Kyuzo, though in subtler ways. I can be a very serious debater, especially when it comes to my hobbies (movies, music) and I have several skills (or traits) that none of my friends or family possess. I would actually like to be Kambei, but lack the necessary skills to be a good leader.

I think that I'm most like Heihachi, largely because I try to remain good-natured and jovial, even when under enormous pressure. I also think that whilst I am brave, like Heihachi I know when to stand up for myself and when to back down and run away. Back when I was in college though I was probably more like Kikuchiyo - nursing something of a chip on my shoulder. I was also prone to being moody with others and tried too hard to fit in with others.

Of all seven samurai, I believe I have the most in common with Katsushiro Okamoto. I was raised with little conflict and little opportunities in my surroundings. I realizes now, having seen cities and populations throughout my young adulthood, that so many things are yet to be learned, and therefore I seek out knowledge and experience. Katsushiro's coming of age story mirrors my ever-continuous story of self-improvement. Kasushiro wanted to become Kambei's disciple, and with similarities to Kasushiro, I am seeking my own Kambei to follow . . . a character [or lifestyle] that offers correction and discipline to my own way of life. In the movie, Katsushiro began a relationship with one of the villagers. Although I have yet to gain that similarity with him, perhaps she is only still in a disguise. We do, however, share conflicts within, and although I'm not torn between the love of a girl and the death of my enemies, how many people can attest to no internal conflict? The question of which samurai I would most like to be is an easy one to answer, and I believe I may have answered it already. As Katsushiro wishes to walk alongside Kambei, as do I wish to walk along my own influential teacher. Whoever or whatever my Kambei may be has yet to be written.

Toshiro Mifune’s Kikuchiyo. He's wild and crazy yes, but when you find out his past you can't help but feel for the guy. And even when he is at the epitome of cool he dies with his butt hanging out. What's not to love?

Of the seven samurai, it's very difficult to pick who I am most like. The closest, and I am very reluctant to say this, would be Okamoto. I can relate to his ambitious, yet naive nature. He is surrounded by his role models, who are much older and much more skilled than he is. He has his dreams but he also needs a reality check. Okamoto is also my least favorite samurai. He picks the worst time to mess around and sleep with the girl. It creates even more conflicts, as if there weren't enough already. Good going. Way to help the team out. I'd most like to be like: Kyuzo He doesn't say much. But he takes action when he needs to and he does his job so well. He is so skillful with his sword. With a minimal number of moves, he takes his opponents down. No need for superfluous words: He focuses on his craft. Of all the samurais on screen, he has been my favorite. Not only would I one day like to be that skillful at what I do, but I would like to take action without hesitation and carry out my task in a combination of smooth motions. A very idealistic goal, but nevertheless, Kyuzo is definitely someone to aspire to be like.

I'm probably most like Heihachi. I stay optimistic in tough situations and my strength would be to keep everyone else confident and in good humor. I know that if I were to be a samurai, I'd probably be average in battle but many understimate keeping in good spirits before and after that battle. I think I'd be the guy to help everyone get to that point, but I wouldn't be the one you trusted during the battle. I'd like to be Kambei, but who wouldn't? He's the most skilled and he's incredibly sharp. But, if you're going to be as all knowing as Kambei, you have to be prepared for the ambivalence that comes with it. It's no secret Kambei is jaded because of all he's seen, but that allows him to create a distance between himself and the rest of the world. That distance is what allows him to do what he does so well. He can identify with the villagers, but he'll never become one of them.

I would say I'm Shichiroji...The fun-loving best friend.,,I take up the peasants' cause because there's no way you're going to let him have all the fun... even if that fun means fighting enormous mechanized bandits, taking on a Citadel-class airship, training terrified farmers, leaving behind an irate geisha girlfriend. I fight when needed and always live to tell the tale! Would like to be Kambei Shimada, the leader of the group!

Determining which of the Seven Samurai I would strike you as depends largely on where you meet me. By day, as a soldier and a musician, I would probably resemble Heihachi. I won't be winning any orchestra auditions as a "barely mediocre" clarinetist and I never was the best shot with a rifle. Despite my shortcomings, I'm fairly good-natured and, while never being the most popular guy, I am well liked. People also tell me I'm funny and, while it's not my place to confirm those claims, I won't deny them either. But by night, at a sporting event, I'm much more of a Kikuchiyo. Case in point: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/sports/Patriots-throttle-Pride-78-5438989664.html I am the "viking-horned" clarinet player mentioned in the second paragraph. At a GMU basketball game, I jump up and down on the bleachers screaming at the visiting fans and the opposing players from my perch a few feet from their bench. I must say, though, a clarinet slung over my shoulder doesn't quite produce the same effect as Kikuchiyo's oversized katana. I've largely retired the Kikuchiyo part of my personality, though, so I'd say I prefer being like Heihachi.

I would say I am Heihachi Hayashida. I am less skilled with the sword, but am quite good for comedic relief. I would most like to be Kyūzō. He is a most honorable and capable warrior, and is an admirable character. Quiet and modest, trustworthy and valiant. These are character traits I could use, no matter what setting or time period.

I am most like Takashi Shimura's character, Kambei Shimada, because I have the personality of a wise and tired old man. I also remain calm in many situations and always strive to be an organized leader. I wish I was more like Toshiro Mifune's character, Kikuchiyo, because he is the most care-free yet arrogant character with a huge ego who has the most fun in the story. I guess you could say that with a couple of drinks I transform from Shimada to Kikuchyo.

As Kurosawa was so successful at pointing out, there is a world within the individual. All of humanity can be portrayed in one man's story. So my answer to both questions (though admittedly a bit of a cop-out) is that I am most like all of them, and conversely would most like to be like none of them. There are characteristics of each one within me and within you.

I would much rather be Kyuzo than Kikuchiyo, but more importantly, Katsushiro gets the girl ! I know the ending is a drag because only the farmers won, but Katsushiro got 2 cherries popped (war and Shino), survived and is young enough for a sequel. I'd most like to have been in Katsushiro's shoes. He's by far the greatest Gary Stu in history! I also believe I am most like him.

Heihachi Hayashida, I suppose. Would love the comradery of the group, would love to be one of the seven, would love each of the six others, and would try to blend in with the rest while still adding a little personality. Not being a master of the sword, though, I would die early in the battle. But it would be worth it.

I'm like Gorobei, I'm very precise and concise, very cool-headed, yet still I'm a skilled man in certain things. I also tend to plan everything I'm going to do in the day and the week, sometimes even what I'm going to do in some months from now, so It's like when he planned the whole strategy of attack against the bandits, he received help, but he was the main executor, just the way I am in work teams and so.

I'm probably mostly like Kikuchiyo, as I lack the general class or self-control needed to fit in properly with the rest of the samurai. I'd probably like to be more like Shimada, as I'd like to be more of a calm, collected and overall suave individual. Also, I'd like to be a leader of men, because really, who wouldn't?

My favourite samurai is Gorobei. He has just the right amount of humour, cynicism, outlook, and plenty of experience. He can affect the mood of the others through his wit or his silence. I feel he is the most wise after Kambei. As for who I would most like to be, that's a tough one. Kyuzo has a certain peaceful quality to him that I admire, but Kambei is the most grounded of the seven and certainly the most intelligent. I'll have to go with Kambei since he is the most wise and the rest give him so much respect. When a group of samurai eagerly give all their respect and trust to one, it's hard not to want to be that one.

Kyūzō. He is silent and stealthy and gets the job done with haste. What I love about the film is that it pretty much sums up my feelings about war, which is that a solid defense will win the battle, any battle.

I guess I would have to say I'm most like Heihachi Hayashida. No matter how serious things get I tend to keep things light and make everyone else feel at ease even if deep down I'm not. If I could be more like any of the others maybe Kikuchiyo, the brazen arrogance and the swagger is something I've never had and would be fun to try.

This is a painful question to answer as it forces me to look at myself and my craft (though I use a pen rather than a sword)rather critically. I'm afraid I'll have to confess to being most like Kikuchiyo in the earlier part of the film: arrogant and brash, but not without potential. With a few more years of dedication, I hope to become as worthy a practitioner as he was at the end. The second question is easier. Kyūzō for his total mastery of the sword and the fact that he doesn't have to boast about his skill as it speaks sharply for itself.

I would have to say that I relate to Heihachi Hayashida (played by Minoru Chiaki). He is aware that life is a chain of games. I would hope that I would laugh til I died, and helped my comrades to do the same. For the second part of the question, I would say that I would like to be like Kyūzō. It is easy to respect someone who is so dedicated and skilled.

Ah, to be a Samurai. Do I dare say I have Katsushirō Okamoto's lady killing abilities? Or would it better to be age-respected and wise like Kambei Shimada. Perhaps I'm everybody's favorite mental case and pick the ringer- Kikuchiyo. I could go for that ironic, Ringo Starr- charm that is only developed by being the one nobody remembers or has great attachment to and choose Shichirōji. No, that would be too far in the hipster camp for my liking. I don't think I can ever quite reach Kyūzō's ability with the sword and stoicism. Althoguh I'd quite most like to be one of those farmers- getting a Baron von Steuben training routine before I finally get to run around the village oddly screaming and pointing my spear- I would like to avoid disqualification from the competition. I believe I live most closely attuned to Gorōbei Katayama. I might be able to develop excellent plans and fortifications but I'm just that secondary guy- caught between stronger personalities who might not outdo me but are certainly more loved. For now, I'm just the sidekick. Looking ahead, past any psychological trauma the question might inherently reveal, I do aspire to one day be a Heihachi Hayashida. Just you wait, one day I'll be able to cheer any somber mood with my wit and humor. I might lose my archery skills and die early but at least I'll enjoy those moments with my alliterative name.

I think I'm most like Gorobei Katayama. He was the second samurai recruited by Kambei, and like him, I'm quick to support a worthy cause. I also like how's he's the most like Kambei's right hand man. He's got excellent skills as an archer and helps orchestrate the master plan. Like Gorobei, most of my life I've been a supporting player, trustworthy and faithful to whoever the Kambei type may be, but content to let them lead and lend my quiet support through my resolve and strength. They say the hardest instrument to play in a symphony is second fiddle, because everyone wants to lead. Well, I'm content to humble myself and serve the greater good of the group. I can take charge when necessary, but don't abuse my responsibilities and powers when I have them. Ideally, I'd like to be more like Kyuzo. His skill and dedication to pursuing his craft with excellence is nothing short of inspiring. I wish I had more Kyuzo's in my life, people I could look up to with awe and imitate. We need more honor in the world, and Kyuzo embodies that to me.

I identify most with Kikuchiyo because he's an outsider trying to fit in. He can be mean and sarcastic and cynical but these are all just layers he has built to hide his insecurities. Deep down he cares and has a heart.

For me it is easily Katsushirō, played by Isao Kimura. The obvious reason would be because I find myself so in awe of the more skilled and experienced samurai in the film. For me, the Kambei character is just a perfect model of what the samurai should be, and I think I would certainley try to latch onto his ways much the way that Katsushiro attempts too. I found myself wanting to learn from Kambei the entire film, so its hard not to feel like I am viewing the film through Katsushiro's eyes.

Although we all, myself included, my aspire to the calm mastery of Kambei, I am actually quite happy to be like Gorobei -- a skilled warrior with a clear vision of the world as it really is and an abiding sense of humor despite that knowledge. Gorobei, like Kambei, leads by example, but both of them follow the old Chinese dictum on leadership: A leader is best, who, when the task is completed, his followers say, "We did this ourselves."

I would like most to be like Kambei: wise, but not too cocky or egocentric, kind, but tough when I need to be, and most of all, a good leader whom people can look up to. I am not quite there. I would say that I am most like Kikuchiyu, intelligent, but sort of a goof at times, a clown you might say. While I have the best of intentions, others do not always view my actions as such. I don't really fit in anywhere I go, but I'm okay with that. I sympathize with people, I think about their feelings before my own. I don't tend to think things out as well as I should, normally charging into things head first without considering the implications of my actions, often leading to myself getting hurt, either physically or emotionally, as Kikuchiyu did while attempting to avenge the death of Kyuzo. While I may not be the best, I am by far the most lovable.

I am most like Katsushirō Okamoto. If my life were the tales of a samurai, they would be just beginning. There are many battles I have yet to fight, compared to others who have more experience with the sword. I try to find my niche in life -the fencing club won't even take me! I look up to the seasoned leader, Kambei Shimada. I would one day like to be more accomplished like him.

Heihachi Hayashida, I'm the glue of my group, make them look at the brighter side of life, and I'm only so so at most activities. If I could be any of them I would choose to be Kambei Shimada, such patience and knowledge gives him an eloquent and easily admirable authority.

I'm an average sort of guy like many other posters here, so I'd have to say I most identify with Heihachi Hayashida. I played basketball in school and, while I was never the best or most coordinated player, I was pretty good at keeping everyone in good spirits and cracking them up to ease the tension before a big game. Now, I've always sort of liked being the Heihachi guy. I never was that competitive, and the supporting players make up the backbone of any team.

I am most like Gorobei Katayama. Very easy-going, postive, optimistic, and friendly. I know what I am good at, yet carry no ego with me. I realize that through the strangest parts of life we find the greatest friends. I am interested in the character of others, as life's psychology drives my enthusiasm. I would most like to be like Gisaku, the Old Man. I strive to be one with great intuition, wisdom, and foresight. Aiming to live a long and healthy life, I hope to be able to solve the greatest of problems with similarly great hindsight. There is one problem in this film. Gisaku provides the one answer to solve it. Everything else in the film is subsequent to that.

I think everyone kinda wants to be Kikochiyu or Kambei, just because the first is Mifune revelling in his own badassery, and the latter is Shimura's brilliantly wise good guy. But while I wish were both of them fused into one, Im probably closer to Heihachi. I kinda hang out with people who are more likely to succeed and entertain them, usually with Kurosawa films.

Forgive me for sounding narcissistic, but in various small ways, I'm like each of the seven samurai. For example: Heihachi...because I find difficulty keeping serious in any situation, Shichiroji...because I trust close friends implicitly, Kyuzo...because I believe in doing one thing in your life to perfection, Katsuhiro...because I would much rather take a girl into the woods than fight, Kambei...because I, too, have cut my hair to help another in need, and Kikuchiyo...because I am consistently trying to be something that I am not naturally. However, if I could be more like another character, I would like to be more like Yohei....because he's absolutely hilarious.

I would have to say that I would resemble Katsushirō the most. I still have many years ahead of me and much to learn, about life, honor, love, and the various barrages life has to throw at me. But I'm eager to learn and desire to better myself. Though many of the seven have their share of admirable qualities I would most like to be like Kyuzo. The man has a remarkable self control and strength. He knows his limitations but still strives to test them, though never succumbs to vanity or self indulges in his talents. I can't help but admire such a person and I would be proud to be able to seemingly have such a balance on my life and have such strength of character with my own personal identity.

I've always felt like I've got the leadership and planning cred (thought I'm not as adept in other fields), but I never go solo (equal parts fear of responsibility and humility). I guess I'd like to be a combination of Kyūzō and Kikuchiyo. I'd like to have Kyūzō's stoicism and talent with Kikuchiyo's empathy and passion.

Of all the Samurai within the group assembled by Kambei, the one I most resemble would be Heihachi, since my verbal wit tends to be stronger than any physical capabilities. Strangely enough, the one I would most like to emulate would be Kyuzo, because he his stoic qualities allow him to be very calm in tense situations, and he possesses wisdom few people can truly attain.

Right now, Katsushiro Okamoto registers the most for me in my life. As an admittedly shy and, at times, unassertive young adult so afraid of failure and humiliation, I feel like I struggle to stand up for myself and take control of my life—and often pathetically fall back on the easy comfort of my parents' love and generosity. I admire Katsushiro’s audacity to make something of himself, to leave the easy life provided by his family—no matter how idealistic, cliché, or excessively earnest it may seem to others. I feel like I have that similar sense of urgently wanting to prove my worth, though I’m still trying to find the courage and the appropriate means to do so. In a way then, he kind of epitomizes both who I most resemble (at least in the beginning of the film) and who I want to be like the most.

I am probably most like Katsushirō Okamoto, because I am someone who never gives up a goal and will do anything to achieve it. He is a strong-willed and ambitious man but finds time to fall in love and balance his personality. I would like to be most like Kambei Shimada, just like Katsushiro, because he is someone who epitomizes the idea of charity. He helps rally up the other six and encourages them to do their best and to be honorable towards others. He is a great teacher for Katsushiro and I.

I suppose I am most like Heihachi Hayashida or Gorōbei Katayama. Like Hayashida, I try to keep my friends thinking positively with my general jovialness, especially in the face of hardships. Also, in the event of a samurai battle, I would surely be the first to fall, but that's far less important than the first similarity, since wielding a sword at all for me would be a futile gesture. Like Katayama, I take charge in group planning situations, and would likely be the one devising the plans for the battle because of this. But still, I believe I am closer to Hayashida. I hope to some day be like Kambei, however-- older and wiser, yet still fully capable in my field and admired for the skills I have refined over the years.

I wish I was most like Toshiro Mifune's character basically because Mifune is such an incredibly physical and hilarious actor (the samurai, the SAMURAI!), not to mention that his character Kikuchiyo, albeit brash, is also fearless and readily gives his life for vengeance. However, I do not think I'm most like Kikuchiyo (sadly) but instead Katsushiro, the most innocent and amateur samurai who's still willing to risk his life. I don't profess to be super-skilled at any one thing, but if fighting for the right cause I would be willing to risk my life, even if I have to learn on the fly.

I am most like Tochiro Mifune's Kikuchiyo (one of my favorite actors), a bit volatile and but with a noble streak :-) but would like to be like Gorōbei Katayama as I've always admired archery and I enjoyed how he put together the plan to defend the village. While not being the leader of the group he exhibited leadership skills and was very important to the story.

I suppose I am most like Katsushiro, even though I would most like to be like Kambei. I tend to get rather existential about the roles I play in life, thinking I want to try to be like a distance runner (I run XC and track for my school), rather than thinking that I already am one. I think Katsushiro thinks the same way about being a samurai--he tries his best to be what he sees as a samurai, rather than just letting the title fall to him. Kambei, on the other hand, is the guy everyone looks up to, the one that seems to be the most well-balanced when it comes to character traits. He's smart, mature, generous, and funny. I suppose this kind of personality can only come to one who has been around the proverbial block a few times, so I suppose that's something for which to shoot (I suppose it's no coincidence that, since I am most like Katsushiro, I want to emulate Kambei the most).

Kikuchiyo is certainly my favorite, because he's such a crazy, brave, and goofy bad-ass. He's there because he wants to be a samurai and that's it. There no real desire for pay or honor (well, I suppose you could say honor has something to do with it) or what have you. Out of a sort of idolization he helps the village by giving and sacrificing all that he has out of a want to be part of the samurais. He's quite unpredictable and I love that. His character kind of keeps everybody on their toes, but I wouldn't say I'd be most like him. That'd be Kambei, because I'd be one to think and plan before I act.

Of them all, I'd say I'm still the most like Katsushiro - the young, eager apprentice who likes to think he has some of the qualities of the other samurai (and maybe sometimes they do show), but in reality has a-ways to go. Naturally, the samurai I'd like to be is his idol Kyuzo - the disciplined, cool-as-a-cucumber master.

Not to be a broken record, but I have to see myself as Heihachi Hayashida: I'm a bit bigger, never take things too serious, always game to pour drinks, put smiles on friends faces (or at least I like to think I do), more likely to do menial tasks, etc. But, I'd prefer to Kyuzo. I want those swords skills... But if I want to be like Kyuzo, does that make me Katsushiro?

I suspect I am most like Heihachi Hayashida, who is kind of the spirit leader of the group. Definitely competent as a samurai, but keeps the crowd entertained and loose. He never gets too down about their difficult circumstances, preferring instead to keep an optimistic view on things in the hope that things will change for the better. I would most like to resemble Kambei, though. His quiet wisdom inspires confidence and trust in his men. He allows his people to do their jobs and puts them in the places they will be most successful--he knows those whom he surrounds himself with.

CHRIS ESTES I'd certainly want to be like Kambei. One of my heroes. But I suppose I identify with, if this counts, Kurosawa. Let's call him the 8th samurai. The steady hand, the observer, the one who believes preserving and telling the story can be as important as participating in the events themselves.

If there's anyone I identify with it's Kikuchiyo. I'm just as temperamental as he is but I also share his empathetic feelings for the villagers. Well I don't know any villages but I do feel empathy for tons of people. It's how I understand others. And I have no problem with relating to him because he's not your typical hero type. He's not even the leader, he's his own man. He's not even your typical samurai. That's why I see myself as him. I'm no samurai nor will I ever become one in my entire life. He's your everyman character of this movie. That's just my opinion. And I just want to say kudos to you guys for doing this. It's a great way for those who aren't massive Criterion collectors to get involved and for those that are collectors to expand their collection and find new things.

But, i'd like the to be like Kambei Shimada ... what is more compelling and romantic than the wise and able warrior who has seen too much blood and is wary of battle. A man of skill, duty and honor who is well aware of the cost, but more importantly, what is at stake.

I most identfy Heihachi Hayashida. i feel like if one were to take a look at my group of friends I seem to be an odd member of the group, not subversive just slightly askew. Sometime i feel i'm accidentally victorious but victorious no less. While i try to convey a air of skill, i am more adept at honing & sharpening the spirits of the group. i don't supply the most OBVIOUS skill but my place among my friends [i believe] is honored & appreciated. I would love to be in that position because I feel I would love and lead my people to the very best of my ability the same way he did. It would also be nice to have the whole tribe looking up to you.

Also, it is of highest values to understand the others and help them out in the time of need without caring about your own.

I'm most like Heihachi, experienced but not as skillful as others. But that's ok. As is said of Heihachi, he can lighten the mood when things get tough. That is how I am at life and my job, although like Heihachi, I can sometimes exit the stage right when others need me most, though not my fault. I would like to be more like Kambei, a previous mentor of mine was so highly regarded at my job he was nationally recognized and then picked me for his position when he left. In this case, I wish I had the wisdom to be more like him.

But he's the one that viewers admire and identify with the most because he's the most entertaining one (thank you Toshiro Mifune!) And you know what? I'm more than happy to be most like him!

I believe I am most like Heihachi. Serious when need be, but typically light hearted and humorous. Time spent in the military shows me this is exactly how I handle strife. At first consideration I'd like to be like Kyuzo, skilled and controlled. However, truth told, I see admirable traits in Kikuchiyo even more-so. Hes brash and inexperienced, yes, but he also has dedication higher than I've ever displayed. Absolute determination to become a samurai, though with false lineage. He also more closely sympathizes with the villagers later in the film, even after so harshly teaching them a lesson reguarding thier irrational fear of the samurai. I consider these good traits, albeit in need of development at times.

I suppose I would choose to be Gorobei as well since I already have many of his characteristics including a round face and of course it also helps that he is one of the few who is still alive at the end of the film.

Heihachi Hayashida. That's what I do all fall and winter. I aspire to be more like Kambei, though.

I'm most like Kikuchiyo from clowning to serious, finding his own way not really a group person. Would most like to be more like Kyuzo who has the focus to really excel at one skill and Kambei who has the calm ability to handle diverse personalities at the same time.

I think I am most like Kyuzo. At 78 I have always been serious about life and think things out carefully. I don't know that I have his gracefulness, though. I think I wamt to be most like Kambei Shimada. I hope to live a long life, but I will always be a calm and practical person. I would like to be more colourful.

I am probably most like Okamoto Katsushirō. I am a young ambitious man who has a dream to become someone (in this case a film director) and I like to keep myself in company with other experienced film directors. When I do my amateur tendencies stick out like a sore thumb. Not only because there is still a lot I need to learn but I tend to borderline idolize other experienced film directors like how Katsushiro idolized the wise Shimada and the highly skilled swordsman Miyaguchi to a point where he became a bit of a nuisance. I also tend to have the urge to always prove myself among my experienced peers thinking immediate and quick ( and sometimes irrational) actions would be bring me close to there level. This would also make sense on why I would like to one day be like Kambe Shimada. Be at a level where I have a lot of experience under my belt and be able remain in control even in the most roughest times. I want to be able to lead teams in achieving a goal, whether it's a personal project or a mission to help others.

At this point in life, I am represented by Kyūzō. Years before, it was as if I was Kikuchiyo, so angry and impulsive, resenting everything around me, even if I was being what I resented. Now being like Kyūzō, I find myself shutting my mouth and relying on stern observation to understand what's going on and why it's happening to me. After all, I was in it by choice. I do assume as my life goes on I'll probably shift down from the Sixth Samurai and onto the Fifth (Katsushirō, going from my stolid observation, thrusted into the truth that is my imbalance in the lack of experience against and overabundance of knowing what OTHER people will do), the Fourth (Heihachi, in the wake of my lack of experience, I will use charisma and anecdotes to keep others at bay from completely doubting my abilities), the Third (Shichirōji, looking for someone I can directly serve under since I cannot make it on my own), the Second (Gorōbei, in doubt of anyone to pick out, I'm picked up by someone without my volition and eventually agree to the whole onward thrust of whatever they assign me with), and the First (Kambei, wherein I'll find my complete self-actualization in the path I've supposedly been given but in actuallity have only chosen for myself). I guess that's a grand way of looking at it, but to be more honest I shift from one character to another all the time, given whatever situation I think I'm in. In truth, we're all the Seven Samurai, all the time, every day. It's just a matter of which one we choose to be and why. But what a glorious thing to know that we are all, truthfully, the Seven Samurai!

Sadly, I have not seen the movie. I know, it is a crime. I have been meaning to, but I just haven't yet. A $50 gift card to get it would be nice though :-)

Definitely Kikuchyo, such a bad ass yet he doesn't ever stop personifying the noble savage. $50 gift certificate would be so nice, could finally own this movie, and not hate these poor college years!

I wish I were cool enough to be Kyūzō, but I'm more like Kanbê Shimada. However, that's pretty cool.

Kikuchiyu in that try as I might to act like I know what I'm doing, I don't, and frequently fuck up royally with the best intentions. I've also been known to bark at the high and mighty. And of course I'd like to be more like Kyuzo. Who doesn't?

Of the seven, I think I'm most like Kyuzo: quiet, detached, a bit taciturn, single-minded (i.e., not a multi-tasker), prefers to work alone, but still considerate and empathetic. Of the seven, I'd aspire to be Shichiroji, the dependable, reliable, experienced survivor, respected by his peers and charges; a good guy to have with you and to be around. He strikes me as the "career sergeant" type (or like the color sergeant from "Zulu")--not the leader, but one who's a vital and critical part of any group (especially if you happen to be outnumbered).

I feel I am most like Kikuchiyo . He is out to prove his worth through his passion and determination. He is a realist and doesn't allow critism to stand in the way of his goals. He can be a little hot-headed at times, but everyone has they're faults, once again it is that spark in his soul that makes him admirable. As an engineer trying to make it as a filmmaker, I am an outsider without formal training trying to prove my worth through passion and determination. However, I like Kikuchiyo, would most like to be Kambei. A dedicated leader, able to think on his feet and overcome great odds, even if it goes against tradition he fights for what is right with bravery, skill and strength, but still remains humble. A great and heroic man that most people aspire to be.

I believe I'm most like Kyuzo. His stoic calm and fierce ability are very admirable. However, his skill and focus mostly reflect, what I believe, are my two most valuable characteristics: my ambition and strong work ethic to achieve perfection. To answer the question: I feel like I mostly resemble Kyuzo; however, I also wish to be more like him. Watching a true warrior pursue his craft with such intense drive is incredibly awe inspiring.

Heihachi Hayashida - because all I have to rely on is my own personal charm, not my physical capabilities! But Kikuchiyo's temperament is so likeable and fiery that I would want to be him.

Definitely Kikuchiyo! I was born in the countryside and try not to show is too much, I shout all the time (!) and sometimes people laught at me. Horses cannot stand having me on their back for more than 10 seconds, and when I drink I say nonsense an fell asleep everywhere (!) (...what a nice description of myself ;-) )

On one hand, it seems presumptuous for a modern person to compare himself to the any of the heroic samurai (even more heroic in light of the morally confused times they live in). On the other hand, they lend themselves to universal personality types like other groups in popular culture (The Beatles etc.) I think I’m most like Gorobei. He’s wise, but unassuming, content to play a complementary role and stay within the bounds of his abilities. Yet he is always ready when called on to contribute his intelligence or whatever else is required. His skill in archery is outside the expected skill set of a samurai, but it adds a potent weapon to their arsenal. I too I have always felt like my skills lay outside the norm, but that they could be just as effective in their own ways when applied creatively. I of course would most want to be like Kambei. Who WOULDN’T?! His wisdom, shrewdness and experience are far superior to mere physical skill, as demonstrated at the beginning when he disguises himself to rescue the boy. He understands life, sees the big picture. He is a survivor, proven both by having lived so long in a dangerous profession and by being one of the three left standing at the end. Kyozo may be the master of swordfighting, but Kambei is the master of life.

Of the seven I would most closely resemble Shichirōji (though I'd like to think I'm not a spitting image.) His loyalty to friends, lighthearted humor and amiable presence always makes one feel welcome and at home. Not one to stick out in a crowd, his presence is only felt when it needs to be, and his trustworthiness is exceptional. I like to think I embody those qualities. I would, however, love to be representative of Kyūzō. He has long been my favorite for his dead calm and careful choice of the few words he speaks. Training alone in the rain, darting into the dense forest to retrieve a rifle, his character's richness is summed up in his debut scene, "Had it been steel you'd be dead." That is to say of course my admiration of him only goes so far, less I be most like Katsushirō, which I don't know that I could ever say I am.
