Make that nine and one half hours long, and well worth the endurance test. I saw this trilogy recently in a theater, watching one film per night, and that's the pace I recommend even among the comforts of home. The scope of the story, the grim circumstances, the powerful performances, and the portrayal of the devastating effects of war on the human spirit are both emotionally draining and intellectually exhilarating. This must be among the greatest antiwar films ever made.

Hooray! I've been reading about this film for some years now. I look forward to the chance to get it on the Criterion imprint. Now if they will only consider G.W. Pabst's "Kamaradschaft"!
