JANUARY 2008   NEW RELEASES
It's the start of a fresh year, and as we look forward to all that 2008 will bring, we can't resist taking a last look back at the slew of new directors we happily welcomed into the Criterion Collection in 2007 (including Lindsay Anderson, Monte Hellman, John Huston, Terrence Malick, David Mamet, Chris Marker, and Hiroshi Teshigahara, to name just a few). And we're looking forward to introducing a lot more in 2008—so keep your eyes peeled for Ang Lee, Anthony Mann, Claude Sautet, and a host of other estimable names.

Happy viewing!

Angès Varda

“A full-fledged visual filmmaker . . . Varda sustains an unsentimental yet subjective tone that is almost unique in the history of movies.”
—Pauline Kael

Agnès Varda's made some of the most indelible French films of the past fifty years and is also often credited with creating a cinematic style that anticipated the French new wave. And this month she’s the subject of a four-disc box set, 4 by Agnès Varda, which includes new, restored digital transfers of La Pointe Courte, Cléo from 5 to 7, Le bonheur, and Vagabond, supervised by the director herself, as well as a host of Varda’s documentary and fiction shorts, new and archival interviews with actors from the films, trailers, and much more! We’re so pleased to have collaborated with this unique film artist.
